The last volume in the five part AMERICAN FAVORITE BALLADS series, originally released in 1962, this 29-track sprint through the history of American folk music has a few familiar old favorites -- "Buffalo Gals," "I Never Will Marry" and "St James Infirmary," for example -- but largely sticks to songs known only to the most devoted folk music fans. Seeger's playing is at his most relaxed and joyful here, with his occasional tendency towards didacticism almost entirely absent.
