Liner Note Author: Bill Dahl.
Recording information: 1955 - 1960.
This selection of highlights from Johnny Cash's first half-decade in show business as a Sun recording artist features well-known favorites like "I Walk the Line" and his first big hit, "Cry! Cry! Cry!," as well as such less well-known but equally high quality songs as "So Doggone Lonesome" and "Come in Stranger." Cash's straight-ahead rockabilly style is propelled by Luther Perkins' trademark primitive yet effective guitar picking (he even gets a song dedicated to him on "Luther Played the Boogie"), that provides a skeletal musical framework over which the singer drapes his sometimes dark, always compelling lyrical imagery. This is primal, essential Cash at his rawest.
