Candy Morrison (Barbara Hershey), a bible-school teacher and quiet respected member of a conservative Texas community, initiates an adulterous affair with a neighbor. When he breaks it off, his wife is found brutally mutilated by an ax, and Candy is charged with the crime. Her attorney enlists the aid of a psychologist to delve into her past - was it revenge or an act of self-defense.
