Gently swinging with one of the sweetest and most beautiful tones ever to come from a tenor saxophone, Stan Getz went through stylistic phases but that tone remained throughout, and he always was a consistently excellent musician, one of the best ever on his instrument. This set collects eight of his pre-bossa nova albums in one package, including 1951's At Storyville, Vols. 1-2, 1953's Chamber Music, 1956's For Musicians Only, 1957's Stan Getz and the Oscar Peterson Trio and Getz Meets Mulligan in Hi-Fi, 1958's Stan Getz Cal Tjader Sextet, and 1960's Cool Velvet. Getz moved into a jazz samba phase in 1962, a commercially successful phase for him, so this set provides a nice and in-depth look at what this fine player was up to before all that. Good stuff. ~ Steve Leggett
