When psychobilly legend the Reverend Horton Heat confided in B3 maestro Tim Alexander that he wanted to improve his guitar skills, Alexander offered to back him up playing spare bass lines and countermelodies on organ. Adding Texas drummer Todd Soesbe, they formed Reverend Organdrun and recorded HI-FI STEREO, an undeniably infectious tribute to '60s instrumental rock. Ventures-style surf, Booker T. & the MGs-style groove, and even mod nuggets such as the "James Bond Theme" are all given worthy workouts by Jim Heath and Co. HI-FI STEREO, right down to its cover art, is a full-blown genre exercise, albeit an exquisite one. However, diehards looking for the Reverend's famous hell-summoning energy may want to stick with his main gig's output.
