Product Description:

This collection features Cajun classics by Lawrence Walker, Aldus Roger, Adam Herbert and many more.
In the late '50s, Floyd Soileau became entrepreneur of the labels most responsible for recording Cajun music, via his companies Big Mamou, Vee-Pee, Jin, and Swallow. Twenty-eight cuts from 1957-1960 singles on those labels are on this collection, which is a valuable document of a time when Cajun music's audience was confined almost exclusively to Louisiana and East Texas. The songs are usually two-steps and waltzes, the kind of stuff that was suitable for dancehalls (and, in fact, these records were often sold at the artists' gigs). There's not a single name here that's known to the general pop audience. Even regular subscribers to the Down Home Music catalog might not recognize any of them, except perhaps Joel Sonnier. His then-high-pitched vocals (with the Duson Playboys) are heard on his first recording, "Tee Yeaux Bleu," made when he was just 13. This anthology would sound a heck of a lot better, needless to say, if you'd been drinking and dancing at an actual Cajun dancehall than in such a large block on your CD player. Diversity is not the hallmark of this music. But certainly the energy is there, with a rawness in production and execution that makes it preferable than many more recent and slicker Cajun releases. Occasionally, it sounds rather like it was recorded in a closet, though the fidelity's usually better, and Ace, as usual, has done the best they can with the remastering. A sense of country lament seeps into the slower tunes, a bit of rockabilly abandon into some of the quicker non-waltzes.
