In the fall of 2003, Milwaukee native James Chance commissioned the up-and-coming Chicago band Watchers for a four-city tour of Detroit, Milwaukee, Chicago and Minneapolis. Joining Watchers was James' brother David, who was enlisted months in advance to help direct the rehearsals in Chicago and bring in a three-piece horn section to round out the group. When this young, talented assemblage took on the classic Contortions material, the results were nothing short of magical...In rehearsal for the tour James remarked, "I feel like I'm back in 1980." This first ever James Chance DVD production, shot by Chicago artist Steve Glabman, includes the entire Chicago concert, a photo montage of the tour, plus a bonus documentary, My Brother Is James Chance a behind-the-scenes look at the making of this Chicago concert through the eyes of David Siegfried.
Recorded at The Double Door, Chicago, on November 14, 2003, songs featured include "Designed To Kill," "Roving Eye," "Jaded," "Throw Me Away," "The Scream," "Almost Black," "Sax Maniac," "King Heroin," "Contort Yourself," "Twice Removed" and "Bedroom Athlete."
The No-Wave scene that enlivened the New York City rock underground in the 1970s produced many charismatic figures. James Chance was one of them, producing a coruscating din with his band The Contortions, and significantly altering the musical landscape in the process. The Contortions laid down a frenetic punk-funk backing to Chance's unique saxophone playing and vocal stylings. They even made it to the hallowed grooves of the NO NEW YORK compilation, an era-defining artifact which embodies all the willful experimentation and addictive energy of the scene. Here, Chance takes a reformed Contortions to the stage for a show in 2003. With their sound aped by many since their demise, Chance decided it was time for a little payback, put the band back together, and tore up stages once again. Among the tracks are No-Wave anthem "Contort Yourself," "Roving Eye," "King Heroin," and many others.
