Issued in 2003, this staggeringly thorough eight-disc box set by the Bear Family label presents the early work of Neil Sedaka. Drawing material from 1956 to '66, the collection features the Brooklyn-born singer's initial streak of pop hits, including the buoyant, love-struck "Calendar Girl" and the upbeat yet wistful "Breaking Up Is Hard to Do," both of which were co-penned by Sedaka's frequent writing partner, Howard Greenfield. OH CAROL also delves into lesser-known numbers (the rollicking "Circulate"), and offers up a slew of non-English recordings (the title track in Hebrew, "Over the Rainbow" in Italian). Though there is more Sedaka here than the average person can handle, this anthology is a dream for the devoted.
