Joey Castle's claim to fame, aside from some non-hit singles for RCA and various indies, is that he was a demo singer for the Hill & Range publishing company on songs earmarked for Elvis Presley. Two of those demos appear on this 16 song package, as well as his complete known recordings (Castle may have recorded additional material under pseudonyms). The early singles are mostly straight Elvis-style rockers and ballads, the highlights of which are the title track and the up-tempo "True Lips." The gem of this collection, though, may be "(I'm the) Phantom Lover," a self-financed single Castle released in the late '60s as a last stab at commercial success; the song is a minor masterpiece that sounds like a product of the previous decade. Three of the tracks on this collection are alternate takes, and the sound quality on the demos is a bit rough. The notes attempt to piece together as much of the Joey Castle story as is known (which isn't much). Rock & Roll Daddy-O has its minor charms for fanatics, and this collection was made for them. ~ Greg Adams
