SOUND OF MOTORDOWN DETROIT showcases the Motown sound for which the city became famous, and includes 42 seminal songs, including "Baby Love" and "My Guy."
Buyer beware! This triple-disc collection of hits by the original Motown artists seems like a bargain on the shelf, but there are some drawbacks if you are expecting original versions. Look closely at the title -- it says "Motortown." Many of the selections on this 52-cut set are live versions. This applies to virtually every Marvin Gaye track, including "Let's Get It On," which is not from the live album either. It's a different performance. This goes for a number of artists as well. "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone" is not the Temptations, but an instrumental by Dennis Coffey & the Detroit Band. If you are a serious Motown collector, you may no doubt want to source this material, but if you are a more casual listener who is looking for a good Motown hits comp, look elsewhere. ~ Thom Jurek
