The Five Blind Boys of Mississippi: Lawrence Abrams, Lloyd Woodard, Joseph Ford.
Liner Note Author: Bill Dahl.
A well-selected budget-priced collection, this 15-track disc features the vibrant gospel tunes and robust singing of the Original Five Blind Boys of Mississippi. Although many of the renowned vocal group's arrangements frequently hinted at R&B (see the smooth "Blind Boys Prayer" and the uplifting "Pilot of the Airwaves"), their message was resoundingly spiritual, making them one of the most popular gospel ensembles of the 1950s (and an inspiration to a young fellow-Southerner named Ray Charles). While there are many other Five Blind Boys of Mississippi compilations available, this disc is an excellent value and an excellent primer to this prolific musical institution.
