Originally released on Max and Lillian Feirtags' Flip Records (hence the title), Flip Doo Wop, Vol. 1 features seminal West Coast doo wop recorded by some of Los Angeles' finest warblers. The label enjoyed an eight-year reign from 1955 to 1963 before ceasing operations. Artists featured are Richard Berry & the Pharaohs, the Six Teens, the Bel-Aires (later Donald Woods & the Velaires), the Rhythm Masters, the Flippers, Candy Rivers & the Falcons, and ex-major-leaguer Arthur Lee Maye, who could sing and hit a baseball. The 22 sides embody many of Flip's finest efforts, including the Six Teens' number 25 pop hit, "A Casual Look," and the Velaires' hurting "Death of an Angel" and "White Port and Lemon Juice," the latter titled after the popular mixed drink of L.A.'s hipsters. ~ Andrew Hamilton
