It's another season of adventures for "Father" Murphy (Merlin Olsen), who no longer poses as a priest to help take care of a group of orphans. In fact, Murphy gets married to lovely school teacher Mae Woodward (Katherine Cannon), and they add a child of their own to the brood! As the children grow up, Murphy, his sidekick (Moses Gunn) and Mae find themselves tangling with brand-new problems in these 13 unforgettable episodes.
A family-oriented series created by Michael Landon (HIGHWAY TO HEAVEN), FATHER MURPHY is centered around a home for orphans that was founded by "Father" John Murphy (Merlin Olsen) and pretty schoolteacher Mae Woodward (Katherine Cannon). A loner who drifted into Gold Hill, an Old West mining town, John put down roots after immoral bosses caused an explosion that left many children homeless. He began the orphanage by posing as a priest, but that ruse was later exposed. John and Mae fell in love and married, and they now run the home with the help of African-American prospector Moses Gage (Moses Gunn). In the heartwarming second season, the newlyweds go away on a honeymoon, only to meet and adopt a streetwise young orphan, Eli. The gang also get to meet Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) engage in a train chase to stop a kidnapping, order a bride for Moses, and welcome a new member to the family when Mae announces that she's pregnant. Episodes include: "The Father Figure," "Outrageous Fortune," "Buttons and Beaux," "Sweet Sixteen," and "The Rockets' Red Glare," among others.

More Family Life At An Orphanage
Movie Lover: Chris Penpold from Hampshire, England UK -- August, 8, 2007
FATHER MURPHY, a tv series created by the legendary Michael Landon, starred Merlin Olsen, Moses Gunn and Katherine Cannon. Set at an orphanage just after the American civil war the story focused on the lives of its residents, young and old. Season 2 comprised thirteen episodes (eight less than Season 1) yet covered a wide range of adventures including bank robbery, child abuse, gun worship, murder and teenage pregnancy. Worthy of special mention are teens Timothy Gibbs, Scott Mellini, Lisa Trusel, Kirk Brennan and Byron Thames who regularly provided a professional performance which belied their young age. Comparable to LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE it remains an absolute travesty for actors and viewers that the show cancelled prematurely (there was no Season 3) leaving many questions about the characters unanswered. FATHER MURPHY epitomised family television at its very best.
