Stagecoach Detective Gene Autry has himself jailed so he can work on the conscience of young Dave Weldon, suspected thief of an Army payroll. Dave escapes, much to the disgust of Deputy Pat Buttram, but Gene catches up with him at the traveling medicine show run by the young man's father, sister and the Cass County Boys. It's a sharp-shooting showdown with the border town boss when Gene and Champ go after the missing payroll and the misguided teenage bandit!

Gene Autry stars in this B-western as an investigator who has himself put in jail in order to find a stolen army payroll. No sooner is he locked up than the prime suspect, Dave Weldon (Dick Jones) makes his escape. Intent on catching Weldon, Autry follows him to a medicine show run by Weldon's entire family. As part of his disguise, Autry joins the show. While using his musical talent as a cover up, Autry discovers that he's not the only one after Weldon. When Weldon is injured by Mike McClure (Henry Rowland), Autry has to decide whether to save a criminal, or give up any chance of solving the case.
