These days Cowboy Copas is remembered, if he's remembered at all, as a footnote in the Patsy Cline story. It was his private plane that crashed in 1963, killing Cline, Hawkshaw Hawkins, Randy Hughes (the pilot and Copas' son-in-law), and Copas himself, and while the loss to country music was immeasurable, it's a shame that Copas isn't remembered for more than a plane crash. A regular on the Grand Ole Opry, Copas charted 14 hits between 1948 and 1963 (Cline, by the way, charted nine hits in her lifetime), and several of them are classic sides by anyone's accounting, including "Filipino Baby," "Signed, Sealed and Delivered" (which Copas charted twice, originally in 1948 and with a remake in 1961), "Tennessee Waltz," "Tennessee Moon," "Alabam," "Flat Top," and "I'm Waltzing with Tears in My Eyes," among others. It's actually a pretty impressive legacy, and as this two-disc, 30-track collection of all of Copas' singles and B-sides shows, he deserves much more than his footnote status in the history of country music. Collecting his early King Records sides and placing them with his later Starday Records output, this set catches everything essential and is easily the best Copas survey out there. He deserves a re-listen, and this is the release that best tells his story. ~ Steve Leggett
