Flautists Horn and Nakai spin improvisatory webs of sound around each other on INSIDE MONUMENT VALLEY, but it sounds like the two men are performing centuries-old rituals instead of extemporizing. The pair had previously collaborated on INSIDE CANYON DE CHELLY, on which they performed in a similar format, recording live in and around an evocative Arizona canyon. This time their travels take them 70 miles northwest to MONUMENT VALLEY, where the natural reverb of the rocks and the sounds of birds, weather, and other organic elements provide an ambient accompaniment to Horn and Nakai's flute work. Though the duo's approach to melody is informed by the Native American tradition (Nakai is of Navajo-Ute heritage), the flautists create melodies that are uniquely their own, and one hears faint echoes of new age and jazz darting in and out amongst the placid, spiritual-sounding tones.
