At Fonovisa, artists may not come out with the longest or most generous CDs in the world -- Fonovisa releases are typically LP length, clocking in at around 30-35 minutes on average -- but they tend to record often and build a catalog in a hurry. That's great for hardcore fans, but for casual listeners, it can be intimidating -- which is why best-of collections like Una Mujer, un Sue¤o are desperately needed. Someone who hasn't been heavily into Ana B rbara but wants to start checking her out might have a hard time figuring out where to begin, and Una Mujer, un Sue¤o would be an excellent starting point. Offering 20 of the Mexican pop star's more essential recordings, this CD does exactly what a best-of is supposed to do: it cuts out the filler and concentrates on the basics. Anyone who listens to Mexican pop radio extensively or has been following B rbara's career since the '90s will be quite familiar with major hits like "Los Besos No Se Dan en la Camisa," "La Trampa," "Nada," "Como Me Haces Falta," and "Bandido," all of which are pleasing examples of what B rbara does best: Latin pop ear candy. Una Mujer, un Sue¤o doesn't pretend to be a collection of recordings by Mercedes Castro or Lola Beltr n; stylistically, B rbara's hits have a lot more in common with Gloria Estefan and even someone like Laura Branigan. And if B rbara recorded in English, many of the songs on Una Mujer, un Sue¤o would have probably been major hits on non-Latin adult contemporary and Top 40 stations. Painting an attractive picture of B rbara's contributions to Latin pop, Una Mujer, un Sue¤o is easily recommended to novices who are exploring her work for the first time. ~ Alex Henderson
