1955's musical drama LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME, the biography of Ruth Etting, a popular early radio and vaudeville performer whose life was anything but a Cinderella fairy-tale, doesn't sugarcoat Etting's story. Doris Day gives a powerful performance as she portrays a woman who does what's necessary in order to fulfill her career.

The songs that Etting made famous are recast with Day's sweeping talent. These songs range from bright novelties ("Sam, the Old Accordion Man") to tender ballads ("I'll Never Stop Loving You," written for the film) to outright torch songs ("Love Me or Leave Me"). Percy Faith's orchestral arrangements are lush and complement Day's belting on "Shaking the Blues Away," and "Everybody Loves My Baby." The softer numbers, such as "Mean to Me," are just as powerful.
