"The posthumously printed 2003 CHINESE SERIES is one last poem of pure perception scratched into the emulsion of a strip of 35mm."
The Criterion Collection actually issued two separate box sets of work by avant-garde pioneer Stan Brakhage over a 7-year period - the first volume in 2003 and the second in 2010. This package presents the entire two-volume set, and does so in the crystal-clear Blu-Ray format. Volume one includes 26 shorts, a series of video encounters with the filmmaker entitled BRAKHAGE ON BRAKHAGE, and audio remarks on selected films by the late director. Volume two presents high-definition digital transfers of thirty Brakhage shorts, plus a host of features including footage from the filmmaker's Sunday salons at the University of Colorado; the short film FOR STAN (directed by widow Marilyn Brakhage); audio recordings of lectures by Brakhage; an essay on the preservation of the films, written by Mark Toscano; two segments from a 1990 interview with Brakhage, done for The Boulder Arts Commission; and much more.
