Personnel: Coleman Hawkins (tenor saxophone); Pete Brown (alto saxophone); Roy Eldridge (trumpet); Ray Bryant (piano); Al McKibbon (bass instrument); Jo Jones (drum).
By the late 1950s, Coleman Hawkins's influence on the saxophone had been so thoroughly assimilated that it was easy to take it for granted. Yet one listen to his set at 1957's Newport Jazz Festival reconfirms his status as one of the pioneers of the instrument. Hawkins helped invent the modern jazz vocabulary with his forceful tone and nimble facility, and those qualities shine through on his interpretations of "I Can't Believe You're In Love With Me," "Embraceable You," and "Sweet Georgia Brown," among others. The all-star backing band--which includes drummer Jo Jones, trumpeter Roy Eldridge, and saxophonist Pete Brown--raises the bar further. The 2007 reissue boasts crisply remastered sound.
