SEND IN THE CLOWNS is heavily produced, in the sophisticated pop-soul style of the early 1970s, but Sarah Vaughan's singing sails gracefully through what could potentially be aural overkill. Her crooning transforms the whole affair into timeless musical rapture.
Sarah Vaughan came to musical maturity in a jazz setting, and it might seem unlikely to find her in such a slick setting, but she still shines, bringing real emotion to songs like "Love Don't Live Here Anymore." These recordings would restrict a lesser voice than Vaughan's, but she's a unique talent, and she strengthens and gives credibility to these songs. She's the heart of this soul music.
