Throwdown: Ben, Dave, Matt, Dom.
Orange County, California has long been a breeding ground for some of the finest and most ferocious punk, metal, and hardcore acts in the United States. On albums like BEYOND REPAIR and HAYMAKER, Throwdown has made it clear that they intend to be a permanent part of that legacy, and with 2005's VENDETTA, they move to the front ranks. Throwdown's sound brings together extreme metal, pulverizing rhythms, and screamo theatrics to crushing effect, but it is their inspired, straight-edge ethos (reminiscent of bands like Fugazi) that gives them distinction.
From the opening jackhammer drums and escalating chords of "We Will Rise" (which then downshift to grinding dirge on the chorus), it is clear that Throwdown intend to take no prisoners. Lead singer Dave Peters, who sings like his entire body is being ripped apart by ravenous animals, commands the listener's attention on every song with his tortured scream-singing and the righteous lyrics of such songs as "Speak the Truth" and "To Live is to Sacrifice." Whether on the hectic speed- metal workout of the title track or the crunching grooves of "Discipline," Throwdown maintains a blistering level of intensity throughout, proving themselves one of the most intense, no-nonsense outfits on the hardcore scene.
