Eubie Blake was the living link to authentic ragtime piano music for most of the 20th century (he performed until five days after his 100th birthday in 1983). MEMORIES OF YOU is a collection of Blake's first recorded works, a series of piano rolls from 1917 that includes rags such as "Fizz Water," "The Chevy Chase," "Mirandy," and Blake's first composition, "Charleston Rag" (penned in 1899 and one of the first known instances of a "walking" bass line).
The disc's final two cuts are Blake's best known numbers, "I'm Just Wild About Harry," and the title track, both of which were recorded in 1973 when Blake was 90. Blake's technical facility on these, as on all the tunes, is impressive, and he plays with enormous energy and enthusiasm. The digital treatment of these piano rolls yields remarkable results--even the rolls from early last century sound as if they were made yesterday--making this package a rare, crystal-clear peek into American music's rich musical heritage.
