Recorded live for the television show "Austin City Limits" in Austin, Texas in November 1985. Originally released on Kaleidoscope [1489100 36].
Recorded in 1985 but not released until three years after Kate Wolf's death in 1986, AN EVENING IN AUSTIN is the full set of 14 songs Wolf recorded for the PBS series AUSTIN CITY LIMITS. Mostly just Wolf's angelic voice and acoustic guitar--although Nina Gerber adds extra guitar and mandolin coloration and Ford James sings a few harmonies that recall the golden Gram Parsons-Emmylou Harris combination--AN EVENING IN AUSTIN is an intimate, unpretentious, and warm live set.
In typical AUSTIN CITY LIMITS style, Wolf prefaces the songs with rambling introductions littered with gentle, self-effacing humor and some revealing comments about the songs' inspirations. The set list reaches all the way back to Wolf's first album, 1976's BACK ROADS, with a haunting medley of Robin Williamson's "Racheco" and "The Redtail Hawk." Wolf is in excellent voice throughout.
