Irish musician Luka Bloom is a singer-songwriter's singer-songwriter, and INNOCENCE is one of his most considered, accomplished, and beautiful records. The mood here is very hushed, with Bloom's acoustic guitar and resonant tenor front and center, while acoustic bass, woodwinds, and other instruments float in and out of the mix adding subtle patches of color.
Like a priest or a poet, Bloom writes on the most profound questions of the heart: love, identity, faith, forgiveness, and innocence. The songs approach these intimate matters as if touching an exposed nerve, and Bloom is so nakedly earnest at times that he borders on melodramatic. Remarkably, INNOCENCE manages to stay wholly credible, thanks entirely to the purity of Bloom's songcraft and the deeply felt emotion circulating throughout.
