Entertainment Reviews:

New York Times - 03/14/1986
"...Exceptionally well acted....Spheeris has some kind of special gift for dealing with outsiders..."
Los Angeles Times - 03/29/1986
"...One of Hollywood's most uncompromising directors, Spheeris has always been fascinated by outsiders....THE BOYS NEXT DOOR is a dark, forbidding vision....Its lack of sentimentality gives it a rugged moral force..."

Product Description:

Young Bo Richards (Sheen), a shy teen who is awkward around girls, teams with friend Roy Alston, who just happens to be possessed of an uncontrollable rage, and the two head for Los Angeles on the eve of their high school graduation. Once they get there, however, the two rampaging teens embark on a senseless murder spree to relieve the ennui of their drab existences. Most notable is the low-key direction by Spheeris and the script by Glen Morgan and James Wong, co-creators of THE X-FILES who went on to write and direct FINAL DESTINATION.

Plot Synopsis:

"The Boys Next Door" is a grim tale of seemingly ordinary teenagers, who, after graduation from high-school, embark on a wild time out in Los Angeles. As the night wears on, their rowdy good time turns into a brutal crime spree, as the boys randomly attack pedestrians and assault a woman who makes the mistake of picking them up in a bar. The teens' mayhem ultimately ends in a violent confrontation when they become trapped in a suburban shopping mall.

Production Notes:

  • James Wong and Glen Morgan later went on to become two of the most popular writers on the TV series, "The X-Files." They left that show when they created "Space: Above and Beyond," for the Fox Network. They serve as executive producers and writers on that series.
