Richard Basehart and Gary Merrill star in a film that's "as stirring a drama as any you'll want to see" (The New York Times). Adapted by Peter Viertel from George Howe's novel Call It Treason, and directed by Anatole Litvak, this riveting World War II drama was nominated for the 1951 Best Picture Oscar.
As the Third Reich declined in power, the Allies develop a radical new plan - to employ German POWs as spies. Led by American Colonel Devlin (Merrill), and executed by Lieutenant Rennick (Baseheart), the plan is risky, and the tension builds as the Americans learn whether the former Nazis will help or betray the Allies.
A very realistic WWII action film, DECISION BEFORE DAWN was shot in 1951 on location in a war-ravaged Germany, using actual former POWs in many of the roles. In the final days of the war, the German Army is suffering but refuses to yield, so the Allied forces, led by Lt. Rennick (Richard Basehart), make the risky move of sending two POWs to infiltrate the enemy. Tiger (Hans Christian Blech) and Happy (Oskar Werner) now face bleak odds against the enormously efficient Gestapo, while Rennick has his own doubts about whether or not the men are trustworthy.
