Auto racing is an obsession in Anderson, Indiana. Amidst the closing of auto factories and resultant loss of jobs, residents continue to flock to the speedway every Friday night - and drivers continue to pour their dwindling resources into patching up their Thundercars for the next week. As much a demolition derby as a race, this cacophony of screeching tires and crashing metal gives inhabitants of Anderson a chance to lose themselves for a couple of hours, channeling their hopes and frustrations into a wild weekly contest for Thundercar supremacy. Directed by Jon Alpert, Dirty Driving: Thundercars of Indiana examines the decline of rust - belt America through the story of a once - thriving town and its all - consuming passion for auto racing.
Documentarian Jon Alpert visits Anderson, Ind., where residents who are still reeling from the closing of a once-thriving General Motors factory seek distraction from a struggling economy in auto racing at the local speedway on Friday nights.
