Originally released in 1997 in their native Norway, In the Shadow of Your Black Wings is, musically, a somewhat tentative debut for symphonic metal act Bloodthorn. The group had no lack of ambition lyrically or conceptually: the album tells a story, both in its lyrics and in the CD art, of the beginning of an epochal battle between good and evil that's Tolkien-esque in its scope. (Second album Onwards into Battle continues the story line, which was later dropped as Bloodthorn evolved into a more standard black metal act.) The sense of timidity comes in the half-hearted way in which keyboardist Geir Mikael and female singer Christine are awkwardly integrated into the band's otherwise aggressive sound. The pair really only have a single song, the delicate interlude "Clouds of Sadness," to showcase themselves; their contributions to the band's sound are otherwise mixed down in the fairly muddy soundscape. Onwards Into Battle would make far better use of the pair, and is a superior album for it; In the Shadow of Your Black Wings is more of a promising but flawed prelude. ~ Stewart Mason
