L.A. metal destroyers Abysmal Dawn play traditional death metal with the fervor of true believers. On their second full-length, PROGRAMMED TO CONSUME, the crippling blasts of metal are flavored with the fetid air of an ancient tomb. Singer Charles Elliott's strangled croak could be coming out from behind frayed, bloodstained bandages, and the barbed wire wrapped around him by the rapid-fire drumming and maelstrom of guitars is oppressive. "Grotesque Modern Art" begins as a flurry of crunch almost too fast to follow before settling into a nice groove, and "The Descent" breaks from the norm with slower, atmospheric guitars.
