Total Film - 07/23/2009
4 stars out of 5 -- "[An] affecting portrayal of a loving father-daughter relationship, which is partly inspired by the sublime domestic dramas of Ozu."
Film Comment - 09/01/2009
"Moving with a sense of continuous flow rather than bumping through a series of climaxes, 35 SHOTS becomes a sort of ballet of emotions, executed with weightless grace and poise."
A.V. Club - 09/16/2009
"[T]he film evolves into a simple, intimate, acutely emotional portrait of a family reaching a painful crossroads." -- Grade:A
New York Times - 09/16/2009
"[Q]uiet and lovely....Its real drama is in quiet moments, in glances and whispers captured by Agnes Godard's exquisite and expressive cinematography."
Washington Post - 12/04/2009
"35 SHOTS OF RUM becomes a delicate study not just in intimacy but in the supremely difficult act of separating with love."
Chicago Sun-Times - 01/20/2010
4 stars out of 4 -- "Part of the pleasure in Claire Denis' 35 SHOTS OF RUM is working out how these people are involved with the others...A wise movie..."
BEAU TRAVAIL filmmaker Claire Denis crafts this subtle family drama about the close connection between a widower named Lionel (Alex Descas) and his daughter, Joséphine (Mati Diop). Since the death of Joséphine's mother when she was young, she and her father have depended only on one another, living together even as Joséphine has reached adulthood. However, she and Lionel realize that the time for them to move on may have come. 35 SHOTS OF RUM (35 RHUM) also stars Nicole Dogué, Grégoire Colin, and Ingrid Caven.
