"THE ANNIVERSARY has ripened in the vaults into a volatile cocktail of high style, overwrought melodrama and obsidian comedy."
Description by OLDIES.com:
The legendary Bette Davis stars as Mrs. Taggart, a venomous one-eyed matriarch who - despite her husband being long dead - demands her three grown sons gather for her 40th anniversary. Eldest Henry is a mild-mannered cross-dresser; middle child Terry is a henpecked weakling; and carefree youngest son Thomas arrives with his pregnant fiance. But this bumpy night has only just begun, as family secrets will be revealed, cruel insults hurled, and frilly underwear stolen. Even if the siblings can survive the festivities unscathed, does the biggest mother of them all have a shocking final surprise for everyone?
Davis has great fun as the domineering, one-eyed matriarch of a clan of spineless sons who return each year to observe her anniversary even though dear Dad has been departed for a decade. This year, they have a special surprise for the old battleax. British.
A possessive and bitter widow tries to gather her three sons back home on the anniversary of her husband's death. One son and his wife are trying to move to Canada, another is a transvestite who steals women's underwear off the neighbor's clotheslines, and the last one has made the mistake of bringing his young girlfriend home for the occasion. As the evening wears on, the tension mounts and the mother is driven to desperate measures to hold the family together.
