The 25th Anniversary Music Box, a massive 15-disc overview of one of Hollywood's most enduring and twisted pairings of director and composer, features expanded editions of the 13 films that Tim Burton and Danny Elfman collaborated on between 1985's Pee Wee's Big Adventure and 2010's Alice in Wonderland. The admittedly pricey collection spares no expense, boasting over seven hours of previously unreleased demos, work tapes, masters, and assorted rarities, an illustrated, linen-wrapped, 250-page hardbound book with a forward from Johnny Depp, a comprehensive 10x10 keepsake book, an hour-long DVD featuring interviews with both artists, a Skeleton Key USB Flash Drive stocked with all of the material on the CDs, and enough liner notes and original Burton artwork to hold your own exhibit. The collection arrives housed in an ornate, tin-covered music box with an embedded chip that plays Elfman's "The Music Box Suite," and is adorned with a rotating, animated zoetrope with strips of photos and artwork. Career overviews rarely achieve this level of luxury, and while it may be a bit of an extravagance, it's hard to argue with the quality of the material (both musical and visual). Besides, it's appropriately whimsical, and charmingly sinister, just like its creators. ~ James Christopher Monger
