Teenage Dance Party concentrates on novelties, R&B covers, and teen ballads recorded in the '50s by this pop vocalist, a few of which were hits. Some of the novelties are so silly and simplistic they're practically children's songs, and in general the material is the fluffiest that '50s pop had to offer. Occasional attempts at rock & roll, such as "It's the Same Old Jazz," are cute if not convincing, and collectors will appreciate the two previously unreleased tracks (one of which is a good version of Ferlin Husky's "Gone"). The disc, at 20 tracks, is unusually brief by Bear Family's standards, as are Colin Escott's liner notes. The booklet omits the session information that the label typically includes, perhaps because this was one of Bear Family's earliest CD releases. Fans will be glad to have these hard-to-find but cloying recordings, although the presentation and quantity of material could have been better considering the premium price. ~ Greg Adams
