This program is part of the popular series from the History Channel that investigates some of civilization's unsolved mysteries and controversies. This episode inquires into the world of cults, which may be defined as groups which practice beliefs not held by mainstream society. Christianity was once a cult. The documentary investigates modern-day religious cults, such as Heaven's Gate and the Branch Davidians, as well as groups from the past whose practices earned them cult status. These include Mormons, Quakers, and Catholics. Two ancient cults are also examined: the Dionysians and the Assassins. Archival film footage, photographs, art work, journals, and scholarly commentary paint of a vivid picture of cults.
