LIVE MONSTERS catches this jam band on various stops along its 1995-98 tour schedule. The album should be enticing to anyone who digs the cast of characters that generally make up the HORDE festival, as these boys come off like Lynyrd Skynyrd and Stevie Ray Vaughan barhopping on E Street. Frontman/vocalist/guitarist Todd Park Mohr is mighty good at manipulating mood through skillful distortion coordination. He's a concise sort of axeman, shifting sensibly between riff-soaked rhythm work, wailing bent-string solos and out-and-out chord-pounding.
Sheets of piano and Hammond organ and a heavy rhythm section lay the foundation for a nice assortment of rock tunes. Hazel Miller provides lovely vocal harmonies and the occasional soaring vibrato that nearly blows the band off the stage. For those who already have the band's other releases, the burning, previously unreleased rendition of Led Zeppelin's "Tangerine" is a nice little jewel on this one.
