-- "Nyro's talent for crafting memorable melodies pull her through..."
MOTHER'S SPIRITUAL, Laura Nyro's first album in six years after 1978's NESTED (and her ninth overall), found the writer of "Stoned Soul Picnic" and "Sweet Blindness" turning explictly to more politically minded material, reflecting a growing interest in the environment ("Talk To A Tree," "Trees Of The Ages") and New Age feminism, perhaps sparked by her own newfound experience as a mother. Long a neglected title, the 2009 Iconoclassic reissue, with superb remastering by Vic Anesi, is the first time MOTHER'S is available on CD--in the U.S. at least. (Iconoclassic has also made NESTED available in a similar format). The liner notes by Nyro biographer Michele Kort stress the serene beauty of the work, in pointed contrast to the rollercoaster musical dynamics of such early Nyro opuses as ELI & THE 13th CONFESSIONAL and NEW YORK TENDABERRY.
