Two great family classics for the price of one: My Friend Flicka (1943) and Thunderhead - Son of Flicka (1945).
MY FRIEND FLICKA: A young boy is determined to befriend and tame a wild horse in this screen version of Mary O'Hara's novel. Despite the fact that his chosen horse comes from "bad blood" ten-year old Ken decides he must tame it, to prove himself as a person. A family classic for all ages.
THUNDERHEAD, SON OF FLICKA: Classic family fare, this charming horse-and-boy story is set against a breathtakingly beautiful Utah background, and is based on the novel by Mary O'Hara. Roddy McDowell (PLANET OF THE APES, OVERBOARD) resurrects his role in the original as Ken McLaughlin, the son of a horse rancher (Preston Foster, LOVE BEFORE BREAKFAST) who tries to break in Thunderhead, son of the previous film's star horse. The all-white colt shows signs of being a racing star, but is injured on his first time out; Ken still loves his horse, but when Thunderhead's albino father goes wild, trouble begins to stir. The sire runs rampant across the countryside, stealing mares from all the farms, but when Ken finds himself menaced by the dangerous wild horse, Thunderhead saves him and engages in a battle with his renegade parent. When Ken realizes that Thunderhead would be happier in the wild, however, he must decide whether or not he can bear to turn him loose.
