Following the magnificent reissue of 1968's classic ODESSEY AND ORACLE, with both stereo and mono mixes on one disc, Big Beat concludes the reissue series begun with 1997's near-perfect four-disc box set ZOMBIE HEAVEN by reissuing the quintet's other album, 1964's BEGIN HERE. As keyboardist Rod Argent and bassist Chris White didn't blossom as songwriters until towards the end of the three-year stretch of singles between the two albums, most of BEGIN HERE consists of blues and R&B covers such as "Road Runner," "You Really Got A Hold On Me," and "I Got My Mojo Workin'," all of which work surprisingly well in the more delicate, jazz-inflected context of Argent's electric piano, Paul Atkinson's spare guitar and Colin Blunstone's breathy vocals. Besides the classic "She's Not There," the album's highlight is the definitive cover of George and Ira Gershwin's "Summertime." The remastered CD contains liner notes and bonus tracks.
