The mellow-toned Jackie Coon had a rare opportunity to lead a record session for this Arbors CD. Coon's flugelhorn and occasional vocals are well featured in a sextet with his old friend Rick Fay (tripling on clarinet, tenor and soprano), pianist Johnny Varro, bassist David Stone and drummer Gene Estes. Highlights of the Dixie/swing date include "Lady Be Good," "When My Dreamboat Comes Home," "When I Grow Too Old to Dream" and "Pick Yourself Up"; even "Me and My Shadow" works well. ~ Scott Yanow
