Recorded in 1933 and 1934.
Although soundtrack albums did not exist in the 1930s, recording stars who were also film stars sometimes made studio recordings of the songs they sang in movie musicals that were then issued concurrently with the films' releases. No one followed this practice more consistently than Bing Crosby, and this Italian disc, which appears from its back cover (listing movie titles and supporting actors) to feature actual soundtrack performances from the films Too Much Harmony (1933), Going Hollywood (1933), We're Not Dressing (1934), and She Loves Me Not (1934), actually uses Crosby's Brunswick Records studio recordings of songs he sang in those films. This means, for example, that while Crosby was joined onscreen by co-star Marion Davies for "We'll Make Hay While the Sun Shines" in Going Hollywood, by Ethel Merman for "Love Thy Neighbor" in We're Not Dressing, and by Kitty Carlisle for "Love in Bloom" and "Straight from the Shoulder (Right from the Heart)" in She Loves Me Not, he performs these songs as solos here. There's nothing wrong with that, of course, especially considering that songs like "Love Thy Neighbor" and "Love in Bloom" were among his most successful recordings of the period. But there are many European compilations containing this material, and from the cover a potential customer would assume that the disc featured soundtrack recordings. ~ William Ruhlmann
