"...Sublime little duets with pianist Jane Jarvis, some fine grooving with Louis Bellson and a venerable encyclopedia of swing bass motifs on this solid traditional date...."
Personnel: Milt Hinton (acoustic bass), Jane Jarvis (piano), Louis Bellson (drums).
Recorded at Celebration Recording, New York on September 3, 1984.
Personnel: Jane Jarvis (piano); Louie Bellson (drums).
Recording information: New York, NY (09/03/1984).
Bassist Milt Hinton, despite recording countless sessions during seven decades, has only led his own recording dates on a very infrequent basis. For this session, he heads a trio also including pianist Jane Jarvis and drummer Louie Bellson. While Bellson is mostly content to swing quietly in the background, Hinton and Jarvis split the solo space on a variety of standards (including "Undecided," "Fascinating Rhythm" and "Joshua Fit De Battle of Jericho") and three group originals. Hinton's charming personality constantly shines through, and the subtle yet passionate music is consistently delightful. This performance was reissued on a 1989 CD. ~ Scott Yanow
