This 1998 album is Richman's second for Neil Young's Vapor Records label. It's also his first after gaining widespread notoriety for his appearance in the hit film Something About Mary. True to Richman's penchant doing the unexpected, he dispensed with the pared-down duo approach he offered on the screen and appears here in his most embellished and contemporary setting ever. The album is richly produced by Ric Ocasek (Richman's original drummer in The Modern Lovers, David Robinson, departed that band early on for what turned out to be the much greener pastures of Ocasek's outfit, The Cars).
But though the surface may change, the man's heart and mind remain unchanged and this set, as usual, finds Richman wide-eyed romantic troubadour mode. From songs about the wonder of love and its possibilities, to a heart-felt narrative about a lonely little store, Richman has again fashioned an album of stark truth and simple beauty.
