This is a collection of Ferde Grofe's "symphonic jazz" pieces, written for Paul Whiteman between 1924 and 1931.
For this release, the Beau Hunks expanded their lineup to encompass a 35-piece orchestra. This Dutch ensemble has previously explored music from Little Rascals and Laurel & Hardy films, as well as sets of compositions by Raymond Scott. Ferde GrofT is known primarily as the composer of THE GRAND CANYON SUITE, from which this set includes "Cloudburst." GrofT was hired by bandleader Paul Whiteman in 1920 as pianist and arranger. All of the pieces in this set were originally scored for Whiteman (though GrofT was later to re-score most of them for symphony orchestra). The Beau Hunks went back to the original scores, continuing their devotion to forgotten American music. This is not merely a re-creation. Rather, the music all breathes anew and swings with gusto. Superbly recorded, this album is a gem.
