Recorded in 1998, this collection of nine free improvisatory pieces reunited the bassist Gavin Bryars, the drummer Tony Oxley, and the guitarist Derek Bailey for only the second time in over 30 years (a live performance had taken place a few months earlier). The trio tentatively reopens old avenues of communication on the introductory "Orchard," but by "Condensation," Bryars' bass is authoritatively underpinning Bailey's alternating musical flurries and silences, punctuated by Oxley's well-chosen, skittering percussive interpolations. Recorded a few years before the onset of Bailey's motor neurone disease (he died in 2005), this is a superlative, absorbing set by three of Britain's most renowned avant-garde musicians.
