Description by OLDIES.com:

This dense adaptation of Ernest Hemingway's novel features Gary Cooper as American soldier Lt. Henry and his ill-fated love affair with British nurse Catherine, portrayed by Helen Hayes, during World War I. Filmed in beautiful Italy, the two lovers will stop at nothing to be together, but Lt. Henry's internal struggles ultimately threaten the relationship. Hemingway's theme of questioning the nature of war and fighting is fully recognized under Frank Borzage's direction.

Product Description:

Frank Borzage's drama is the original, highly acclaimed film adaptation of Ernest Hemingway's 1929 novel about the poignant, ill-fated wartime romance between an American paramedic and an English nurse in WWI. This skillfully crafted film features two of the premiere stars of 1930s Hollywood--Gary Cooper and Helen Hayes--in the leads.
