Personnel: William Parker (shakahachi, bass, balafon, drums, dumbeck); Hamid Drake (drums, tabla, bells).
Recorded live at Systems Two Studios, Brooklyn, New York on April 3, 2000.
Personnel: William Parker (double bass); Hamid Drake (drums, percussion).
Bassist William Parker is one of the galvanic forces in contemporary free jazz, driven by a wildly experimental sensibility and a greatly varied, yet heavily percussive bass technique. Parker first played with percussionist Hamid Drake in saxophonist Peter Brotzmann's trio, creating carefully crafted sonic mayhem. The solo pairing of Parker and Drake here is cause for celebration.
FIRST COMMUNION/PIERCING THE VEIL brings together two Parker/Drake collaborations, and the level of rhythmic experimentation and improvisational daring is at fever pitch through both recordings. Sinuous, labyrinthine, challenging, and beautiful, these performances find Parker and Drake keeping the venerable flame of "energy music" alive.
