Although the songwriting brilliance of pop legend Burt Bacharach is often heralded, the composer/arranger has rarely been the subject of a truly satisfying collection. While THE VERY BEST goes for obvious hits and THE LOOK OF LOVE overwhelms with sheer volume, 2006's two-disc GOLD gets the balance just right over the course of its 41 tracks. Many of Bacharach's beautifully breezy hits (most co-penned with Hal David) are present, including Dionne Warwick's luminous "Do You Know the Way to San Jose?" Tom Jones's boisterous "What's New Pussycat?" and B.J. Thomas's easy-going "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head" (from the beloved 1969 film BUTCH CASSIDY & THE SUNDANCE KID). What really makes GOLD an impressive Bacharach anthology, however, is the inclusion of later renditions of his tunes--with "Make It Easy on Yourself" represented by the wonderfully dramatic Walker Brothers version rather than the Jerry Butler original, and Naked Eyes' synth-driven take on "Always Something There to Remind Me" sitting in for Lou Johnson's little-known reading. For those seeking a dynamic yet manageable Bacharach compilation, this is it.
