The 1960s folk and protest singer Barry McGuire was a successful artist and songwriter long before his massive 1966 hit, "Eve of Destruction," as evidenced by this set, which combines songs from his 1962 debut with Barry Kane, HERE AND NOW, and his 1963 solo debut, THE BARRY MCGUIRE ALBUM. Surprisingly for an early-'60s folk album, McGuire's grainy, weathered voice is largely unencumbered by strings and vocal choirs. It's also ideally suited to material such as his updating of Stephen Foster's "Banjo Song," which carries more than a hint of rockabilly, and the mellow, regretful "Old Paint."
