Jazz bassist Brian Bromber leads an A-list personnel of crossover jazz stars on DOWNRIGHT UPTIGHT, a set that revisits such smoothed-out classics as Joe Zawinul's "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy," Eddie Harris and Les McCann's "Cold Duck Soup," and Herbie Hancock's "Cantaloupe Island." Bromberg is joined by guitarist Lee Ritenour, keyboardist Jeff Lorber, and saxophonists Kirk Whalum and Boney James, among others; the level of musicianship stays high at all times. A jazz-pop excursion that goes down easy, the disc will please light jazz fans, yet it still retains a sense of integrity and cohesion.
